🧧LUNAR NEW YEAR🧧
🐍Wednesday of this week marked Lunar New Year which this year, is the year of the snake. For those born in the year of the snake, they are thought to have the qualities of intelligence, resilience & love
🎆Around a quarter of the worlds population observes Lunar New Year & countries such as China, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia are now in a 15day period of celebration as part of the Spring Festival
🌏 As LNY is a time to reflect, I thought about my exploration of wine around the world & how my goal is to make more of a conscious effect to learn more & try more wines from countries that I’m less familiar with
🤔So with this in mind, I opened this bottle…
🍷Helan Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc de Noir produced by @changyumoserxv – who are a big deal in the China wine making world
📑A partnership between Changyu, the oldest winery in China & Austrian winemaker @lenz_m_moser with the chateau (yes an actual 🏰) is based in the province of Ningxia in central north 🇨🇳
🍇Made from super small Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from 18yr old vines but this is a white wine – the first one in the world to be made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. There’s a whisper of peaching pink to it & it’s pretty stunning to look at 😍
👃🏼And it’s stunning nose too. Pronounced aromas which remind me of – bear with me here – rhubarb & custard with some banana & kiwi mixed in. A blob of strawberry yoghurt in there too
👅 The nose suggests that this could be a sweeter style wine. But don’t let your nose fool you 🙅♀️ It is super dry, med+ acidity with med+ body. Pink grapefruit, red apple, raspberries, blueberry, yogurt & some mineral salinity. Long lingering length with berries hanging around on the palate
💷Around £18-21 from @ocadouk @harveynicholsfood
or @vinvm.co.uk
🍽️I’d like to try this alongside some pink duck breast or meaty fish like grilled tuna
💭A surprising, unusual & extraordinary wine. I agree with @tomgilbeywine – stonkingly good!
