History of Changyu

As the very first winery in China, CHANGYU PIONEER was founded in 1892 by Zhang Bishi, an overseas Chinese diplomat. He decided to establish his pioneering winery in Yantai and named it “Zhang Yu Wine Company.” He imported more than 500,000 vine plants from the U.S. and Europe, paving the way for modern Chinese wine production. This effort was supported by an Austrian viticulturist, August Wilhelm Baron von Babo.

After more than 120 years of growth, CHANGYU is now a group with international shareholders such as ILLVA (Italy, Amaretto di Saronno) and IFC (International Finance Corporation, USA). The group owns and operates eight châteaux and wineries across China. Its extensive portfolio includes wine, brandy, sparkling wine, and health liquor, which are well-received in over 20 countries. CHANGYU is also the largest Chinese wine producer with a significant market share.

In 2017, CHANGYU unveiled the CHANGYU International Wine R&D Center project. This initiative includes research, development, and production of wine, brandy, health liquor, and sparkling wine. It also focuses on ecological tourism and cultural exhibitions.
