Ningxia’s Sunlit Altitude Perfect for Cabernet
How did @lenz_m_moser , an Austrian winemaker end up in Ningxia, of all the places in China to grow grapes and make wine? 🇦🇹 🍷 🇨🇳Back in 2009, when Changyu were looking to build the striking winery that stands here today, Lenz was asked where he would like Chateau Changyu Moser to be located.‘They asked me – ok Lenz, where do you want your winery to be? First I had no idea – I said ‘Not in Shandong because it rains too much during the harvest for me.’So, I travelled to Ningxia on some good recommendations and knowing already that Ningxia produces the smallest cabernet sauvignon berries because of the dry climate, very thick skinned - that means a lot of flavour. 🍇When I got there, I hadn’t realised the altitude, 1,100 metres and after one hour on a hot day in July, my head was burning and I was beaming like a lamp! 🥵 The sun ☀️ is very intense and there is plenty of it ( 3,000 sunshine hrs a year) and on the same latitude as Sicily but with good diurnal range. So, you might have 35 degrees in the day but then you have below 20 degrees in the night-time.And I realised that I would be able to do whatever I wanted with the Cabernet Sauvignon. I said ‘ok, this is the spot for me.’ And in 2013 the chateau was completed.#changyumoserxv #changyu #ningxiawine #winesofningxia #winesofchina #chinesewine #lenzmoser #helanmountains #cabernetsauvignon #wine #winelover#motivation #winemaker #winetravel #wineestate #wineeducation #cabernetsauvignon #innovation #vision
