(5) GROUP THERAPY at www.wineparis.com ( 20 Years in China Series ;-)
My wife confronted me yesterday with one of her top customers question ( she is with Longines Swiss Watches ): " Is the current Tequila hype hurting the wine industry?"
I answered with my standard " Well Dear, think of Baijiu hammering wine in China!"
Damn yes!
We have two elementary problems:
***Cyclical downturn of reds:
This happens every 15-20 years as the pendulum swings from red to white periodically - no problem per se, saw this 2x in my career
***Structural and philosophical:
The wine industry the 80, 90, 00-ies was simply sexy, innovative, new countries being discovered ( Australia, California, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand ) AND “OLD WORLD WINE” responding to the new world challenge with better than ever qualities. Then, wine out selling beer and spirits.
NOW, we have headwinds , strong ones and sometimes beyond our reach:
**Health concerns , well.....
**Lack of innovation, of adapting to “zeitgeist” – this is in our hands
**Spirits are outspending the wine industry by a mile ( with innovative, zeitgeisty products – spritz, tequila, gin, clever line extension and even smarter trading up , macallan etc. )
I do not have a solution yet, however, we try to respond across the board with innovative products from China https://lnkd.in/d2AYnxsC https://lnkd.in/dm-5JAn8 and https://www.madmoser.com/
In China we defined our new style 2 years ago , implemented “elegance and fruit” already and are now going on our mission:
“LET THE BERRIES SPEAK”
and then next step, adapting our markeitng too.
Stay tuned for more next time
